The problem with modern finance apps
If you go to the app store right now and download a popular expense tracker, you are immediately hit with a wall of friction. You have to create an account, verify your email, and click through a premium subscription paywall.
Worse, these apps aggressively ask for permissions to read your SMS messages to "auto-track" your bank transactions. Your entire financial history is synced to a third-party cloud server, often to be anonymized and sold to data brokers. I didn't want to hand over my financial privacy just to track how much I spent on coffee. So, I designed and built Sathe.
Absolute privacy through Local-First architecture
As a practicing UI/UX designer, I believe that trust is the foundation of any good digital product. Sathe is built on a strict "local-first" software architecture.
There is no cloud syncing. There is no account creation. The app requests absolutely zero permissions to read your messages, your contacts, or your location. Every single transaction you log is stored locally within the secure sandbox of your own device. If you delete the app, the data is gone. In an era where every app wants to be a SaaS platform, Sathe is designed to just be a tool.
Privacy GuaranteeYour financial data is yours. Sathe does not read your SMS, does not connect to your bank, and does not upload your ledger to the cloud.
The 6-Second UX Rule
The second reason people abandon finance apps is UI complexity. If it takes you 30 seconds and five different screens to log a lunch purchase, you will simply stop using the app after a week. Habit-forming tools require zero friction.
I engineered Sathe's interface around a single metric: speed. The core user flow is ruthlessly optimized so that you can open the app, enter an amount, select a category, and save the transaction in exactly six seconds. No unnecessary animations, no pop-ups, just immediate utility.
Features without the bloat
Minimalism doesn't mean a lack of functionality; it means a lack of distractions. Sathe includes only the features necessary for strict financial management:
- Temporal Insights: View financial trends and cash flow by year, month, or week to instantly understand your spending habits.
- Multi-Currency Support: Log transactions in any currency, making it universally functional regardless of where you are traveling.
- Customizable Categories: Start with predefined UI categories, but maintain full flexibility to add, edit, or delete them to fit your specific lifestyle.
- Native Dark Mode: A built-in, high-contrast dark mode for comfortable viewing, respecting system preferences out of the box.
